An occupational and health seminar was held at the
NOCECO main headquarters in Naga, Kabankalan City recently. The seminar
attended by 33 employees was conducted by the physical therapy department
of the Riverside College as part of their community-based rehabilitation
program.

The topics taken up were back pain, stroke, fracture,
and anthritis. The speakers were Ferdinand Uy, Salvador Tia jr., Mark Galon
and Denver Brizuela, physical therapy students of the Riverside College
led by their instructor Carlito Gonzaga. The participants learned some
exercises and tips to avoid and alleviate back pain.

They were also familiarized with the different fractures,
how to handle them and recognize the signs and symptoms of anthritis. The
risk factors leading to a stroke such as cigarette smoking, alcohol intake,
high cholesterol level, hypertension, sedentary lifestyle and age were
also discussed during the seminar.

Gonzaga
also explained the SMADS, a common case in the Philippines. He said SMADS
is an acronym for Sudden, Male, Asian, Death, Syndrome popularly known
as 'bangungot' the SMADS is common among males in Asian countries but rarely
occurs in other countries.

The
health seminar is a must to NOCECO employees who need to be healthy to
be effective in their work.
